Who we are

LGD Electric is a licensed British Columbia electrical contractor serving the City of Vancouver and surrounding Metro Vancouver municipalities. Our scope runs from single-circuit residential troubleshooting to full three-phase commercial distribution, completed by licensed BC journeyman electricians working under a Field Safety Representative (FSR).

We carry $2 million in general liability insurance, maintain WorkSafeBC coverage in good standing and build every install to the Canadian Electrical Code edition in force for Vancouver. Electrical permits (City of Vancouver for Vancouver jobs, Technical Safety BC for the rest of Metro Vancouver) and final inspections are handled in our name, never billed as an afterthought.

Our values

Transparent quotes

Every quote is itemized in plain English: permits, materials, labor, freight. You see what each line costs and why it's on the page. No fixed-price surprise-filled bids.

Plain-English explanations

We show you the panel, the breaker, the conductor and the load calc. If you want to understand what's happening behind your wall, we'll explain it. If you want the short version, we'll give you that too.

Honest advice, no upselling

A load calculation sometimes says "your 100A service is fine" and that's the answer we give. If a repair makes more sense than a rewire, we'll say so, even when it means a smaller invoice.

Clean sites

Floors protected, drywall dust contained, daily cleanup. When the job's done, the only evidence of our visit is the work itself.

Company details

LGD Electric was founded in 2005 by Gunnar Dahlberg. Two decades later, the company operates as a fully licensed BC electrical contractor under FSR supervision, serving homes and businesses across Metro Vancouver.

Service area

Primary: City of Vancouver. Extended: every other Metro Vancouver municipality. See the full service-area hub for neighborhood-specific electrical context, permit jurisdiction, and cost ranges organized by area.

Company history

LGD Electrical Ltd. was founded in 2005 by Gunnar Dahlberg. The company began as a residential-focused electrical contractor serving Vancouver's pre-1950 character home stock, with a particular focus on the insurance-driven knob-and-tube remediation work that was already dominant in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Grandview-Woodland, Strathcona, and the West Side character home belt.

Over two decades, the scope expanded to cover the full electrical stack: commercial fit-outs, three-phase service conversions, EV charger installations under BC's Strata Property Act Right to Charge framework, heat pump electrical for BC's CleanBC electrification wave, secondary suite legalization under Vancouver's expanding multi-suite zoning, and the full spectrum of cost-guide categories now covered in detail on the LGD website.

Operations are concentrated in the City of Vancouver but cover every Metro Vancouver municipality. The contractor licensing portfolio spans all four BC permit jurisdictions: City of Vancouver (own permit system), City of Surrey (own), City of Burnaby (own), City of Coquitlam (own), and Technical Safety BC (covers Richmond, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Delta, Langley, White Rock, and every other BC municipality).

What LGD specializes in

Twenty years of focused work in Vancouver's specific electrical context has produced specific specialization in:

  • Panel upgrades (100A to 200A, 200A to 320A, 320A to 400A or 600A for estate combined loads). Coordinated with BC Hydro service-change scheduling.
  • Knob-and-tube remediation on Vancouver's pre-1950 character home stock. Insurance-driven workflow, certified-completion letters for Wawanesa, Intact, Aviva, BCAA, Square One policy issuance and renewal.
  • Whole-house rewires driven by insurance, renovation, modernization, code compliance, or fire/water damage.
  • Heat pump electrical coordinated with HVAC installers. CleanBC + BC Hydro rebate paperwork. CEC Section 8 load calculations in writing.
  • Strata EV charger installations under BC Right to Charge. Full council package preparation (load study, metering scheme, cost allocation, draft resolution language).
  • Single-family EV charger with CleanBC Go Electric rebate paperwork.
  • Secondary suite legalization with CEC Section 8 combined-dwelling load calc, fire separation electrical penetration fire-stopping, and hard-wired interconnected smoke / CO alarms.
  • Whole-home Lutron HomeWorks QSX, Crestron, Savant, Control4 smart-home rough-in. LGD provides the electrical rough-in; AV programmer handles platform commissioning.
  • Commercial LED retrofits with BC Hydro Power Smart rebate handling and BC Hydro commercial-rate payback analysis.
  • Commercial three-phase fit-outs: restaurant kitchens, brewery / distillery, office tenant improvement, retail.
  • Standby generator integration: Generac, Kohler, Cummins air-cooled and liquid-cooled with automatic transfer switches. Tesla Powerwall battery alternatives.
  • Specialty scope: Southlands equestrian agricultural (CEC Section 22), Powell Street and Port Moody Brewers Row craft brewery electrical, gallery museum-grade lighting (90+ CRI track / rail systems), Heritage Vancouver coordination on Heritage Conservation Area properties.

Process

  • 01 - On-site assessment. LGD walks the property, identifies existing electrical condition, checks panel and service entry, evaluates wall construction and access. No quote without site visit on any project exceeding $5,000 declared value.
  • 02 - CEC Section 8 load calculation. Documented in writing. Required for any service-affecting work.
  • 03 - Written itemized quote. Plain English. Permits, materials, labor, rebate paperwork - line by line.
  • 04 - Permit pulled. City of Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam municipal, or TSBC. FSR declaration on every permit.
  • 05 - BC Hydro coordination. Service-change applications submitted at permit time. 8-12 week lead is the long-pole item on most panel-upgrade projects.
  • 06 - Install. Site protection, dust containment, daily cleanup. Phased night-shift execution on commercial / retail / hospitality where required.
  • 07 - Final inspection. City inspector (Vancouver / Surrey / Burnaby / Coquitlam) or TSBC inspector walks the install. Certificate of inspection or letter of completion issued on pass.
  • 08 - Documentation handoff. Certified-completion letter for insurance carriers, rebate paperwork for CleanBC / BC Hydro, project file for property records.
  • 1-year labor warranty on all work. Contractor-scope failures corrected at no additional labor charge.

Quality assurance

LGD's first-inspection pass rate on residential panel upgrades is 95%+. The remaining ~5% of inspections that don't pass on the first walk-through typically catch minor labeling or terminal-tightness issues that are corrected same-day with the inspector still on site. The FSR signs every declaration personally, which puts personal license accountability on the line for every install.

References and reputation

Vancouver electrical contracting is a referral-driven trade. LGD's customer base is heavily repeat-and-referral: previous clients calling for second projects, real estate agents referring buyers facing K&T remediation deadlines, general contractors referring renovation projects, strata councils referring building-wide EV deployments. Letters of reference are available on request for commercial procurement processes.

Certifications and partnerships

  • Lutron Certified Installer. HomeWorks QSX, RA3, Caseta wireless, Vive commercial.
  • Nest Pro. Climate integration with Nest Learning Thermostat ecosystem.
  • Crestron Home / Savant Pro / Control4. Field experience on electrical rough-in for AV-programmer-led whole-home integrations.

Why Vancouver-local electrical contractor matters

Vancouver's electrical context is distinct in ways that out-of-area contractors miss: the City of Vancouver operates its own electrical permit system independent of Technical Safety BC (most BC contractors only deal with TSBC), Vancouver's pre-1950 character home stock has knob-and-tube remediation patterns that are unique to the city's housing era, the marine-environment exterior gear specifications matter on waterfront properties from Point Grey to White Rock, BC's Strata Property Act Right to Charge framework applies to Metro Vancouver strata EV installs in ways that don't apply elsewhere in Canada. Twenty years of Vancouver-specific field experience translates into accurate quotes, fewer surprises, faster permit cycles, and inspection-ready installs.
